Getting to Know Gina
If you weren't in the legal profession, what would your alternative career be?
Government relations. I’ve always been drawn to public service and the ability to help shape policy and advocate for communities.
Which fictional lawyer or legal character do you resonate with the most? Why?
Lt. Daniel Kaffee from A Few Good Men. I admire his fearlessness and his willingness to risk everything to uncover the truth and prevent injustice.
If you could create a new law, what would it be and why?
I have had the privilege of advocating for and helping pass several significant laws. Recent successes include legislation requiring prosecuting agencies to provide police reports to victims and next of kin, expanding lifetime injunctions, updating aggravated assault statutes to cover simulated weapons, and establishing a sex offender management board.
This session, I helped draft two additional bills:
– HB 2045: Closes a loophole in the current drive-by shooting law.
– HB 2044 (2025): Increases penalties from a Class 5 to a Class 3 felony when a body is mutilated, disfigured, or dismembered to avoid apprehension or if the individual caused the death.
There are two additional pieces of legislation I have long sought to pass. The first is the Yen Ha Bill, which would increase aggravated assault penalties for victims who suffer life-altering injuries. The second aims to address deficiencies in current juvenile incompetency laws.
If you could have a legal-themed superpower, what would it be and why?
Truth compulsion. The ability to force absolute honesty would make the courtroom a much clearer place.
