Clinic FAQs

Answers to the questions we hear most.

The Modern Law Clinic offers low-cost, limited scope legal services in family law, making these services more accessible and affordable. By focusing on specific parts of your legal matter rather than full-scope representation, we provide targeted assistance without the traditional financial burden.

Our services are provided by law student practitioners who are Rule 39(c) certified under Arizona law. These students work under the close supervision of experienced Modern Law attorneys to offer high-quality legal services.

Rule 39(c)(4) of the Arizona Supreme Court allows eligible law students to practice law under supervision as Certified Limited Practice Students. This certification is crucial for law students practitioners, as it enables them to provide legal services under the guidance of practicing attorneys. To obtain this certification, a law student must:

  1. Have completed at least two semesters of legal studies.
  2. Not receive any compensation from the clients they serve, although they may be compensated by other entities like law schools or legal aid agencies.
  3. Certify their familiarity with the Arizona Rules of Professional Conduct and other relevant legal standards.
  4. Be certified by their law school as being in good academic standing and of good character.

Our law student practitioners are required to have a Rule 39(c)(4) Certification to work with clients in the clinic. This process ensures that all student practitioners at the Modern Law Clinic are well-prepared and legally authorized to offer reliable legal services to our clients.

Limited scope services mean that you can obtain legal assistance for specific aspects of your case instead of hiring an attorney for full representation. This allows you to manage costs effectively while still receiving expert legal advice and services where you need them most.

If you’re interested in the clinic’s services, please submit an interest form using the link provided on our website. Our team will review your submission to ensure the clinic can effectively address your needs. If approved, you’ll receive a direct link to schedule a required 45-minute virtual consultation.

**Please note, if you’ve had a recent consultation with us, you may not need a consultation clinic if we can determine the scope of your case based on your case notes. We’ll review each situation case by case.

The clinic consultations costs $100 and are mandatory (except in cases where we’ve met with you recently and already have determined the scope and services we can provide you with). This consultation is vital for gathering information about your case and discussing your goals, which helps us tailor our services to your specific legal needs.

Costs for clinic services will vary based on the specific service we’re providing. Our law student practitioners have an hourly rate of $100, so if the scope of your project requires two hours of work, then it would cost you $200 to obtain that service from our clinic.

During the consultation, you will meet virtually with Modern Law attorney and Clinic Manager Jami Cornish. She will gather essential information about your goals and situation and discuss all the options available to you through our clinic services. Consultations are 45 minutes long and will take place virtually over Zoom.

If you’ve had a consultation with Modern Law or attended Pro Bono Day more than 60 days ago, you’ll need to schedule a new clinic consultation. However, if these interactions occurred within the last 60 days, a new consultation might not be necessary as we can often proceed based on existing case notes to determine what services the clinic can provide you. This is why we ask everyone to submit an interest form, so we can determine each submission on a case by case basis.

Anyone needing legal assistance with Arizona specific family law matters, such as divorce or custody issues, who prefers a cost-effective approach to handling specific legal aspects of their case should consider the clinic. It’s especially beneficial for those who find traditional legal fees prohibitive.

Submit an interest form!, Our team will review your situation to ensure that our services align with your needs. This personalized review process helps ensure that we can offer the most effective support for your legal matters.
